Replacement Handles For Windows
Window handles are among the most used parts of double-glazed windows. Over time, they may get worn out or rusted.
You'll need to know the current handle's length of the spindle and its fixings to replace it. The best way to do this is to look at the base of your previous handle.

Handle
Over time, uPVC window locks and handles can be damaged by wear and tear or intentional or accidental damage. upvc door handles repairmywindowsanddoors can mean that the lock or handle becomes difficult to open or close, or it's not even locked in any way. It's tempting to replace the entire window unit when this happens, but it is not always required. Most of the time, it's the situation that a new handle or lock will suffice.
The espagnolette design is the most popular uPVC window handle. This has a spindle which is affixed to the handle and slots into a gearbox that operates the multipoint locking mechanism within the window. It's important to match the correct handle and lock to your windows to ensure that they work properly, which is why we have a wide variety of replacement handles for all types of uPVC windows.
When replacing the uPVC window handle, it's a good idea to use screws with cover caps to keep the screws secure and protect them from corrosion. It is also possible to make use of a spacer or washer to create a more secure seal. A screw cap will stop debris and water from getting into the handle, which can cause damage.
After taking the handle out of the window, it is an ideal idea to clean both the spindle as well as the threaded part of the bolt. This will ensure that the new handle fits and works well, and it can also help keep any dirt from getting into the multipoint lock.
It's now time to put in the new uPVC handle. It is important to read the instructions that come with the new handle and review the previous one to get a better idea of how to go about it. The process is usually very easy. If you do encounter any difficulties that aren't covered in this article you should contact our team for additional assistance.
It is also important to note that if you are replacing a uPVC handle with a cockspur (also known as an Espag handle) you'll need to examine the step height of the window in order to determine the proper size of handle. The steps height is the distance between the base of the window and the place where the handle of the cockspur is.
Hinges
The hinges may not be aligned with the frame of your window If your windows begin to open and shut with a visible space. It's usually a simple fix that can be solved by replacing the hinges. We have a variety of different options and even customize the size of the hinges to meet your requirements.
We can supply different types of hinges suitable for upvc and timber windows. These hinges are available in different colours to match the frames of your existing windows. They also come with all the fixings required to install them. If you have a double glazed window with an older style of hinge, we are able to supply a range of repair screw kits that will allow you to re-cut the old thread form back into the frame.
We offer a wide range of hinge types. They include conventional casement hinges that can be used with the tilt and turn handle or a normal handle and fire escape egress sash hinges, specifically designed for larger side-hung windows. These are designed to be opened fully in the event of a crisis and incorporate an easy-clean position to make it easy to clean. We also carry restricted egress hinges that are designed to restrict the opening angle of the window to 100mm maximum which is ideal for homes with children.
The sound of a hinge squeaking can be an indication that the hinges are wearing out, this is often due to the rubbing of metal against. A small amount of lubricant may help but if the noise persists it is likely that the hinges need to be replaced.
Plumb windows help avoid optional binding, which means that the operating sash of the window is in line with the frame, ensuring that it can be closed and opened properly. A window that's not plumb may have difficulty opening and closing, or may become damaged over time, causing problems with the seal and appearance of the window.
When you purchase replacement windows made of upvc hinges, be aware that they are available in imperial or sizes in metric. In general the sizes in metric are more precise, however it isn't noticeable once they are fitted. The first corner holes on the track are standard but the other holes can vary depending on the original hardware. We recommend that you measure the spacing of holes on your existing frame prior to purchasing any upvc hinges to ensure that they are the correct size.
Crank
The normal wear and tear that happens over time can result in damage to the window handle, lock, or crank mechanism. This could affect the ease of opening and closing your windows as well as compromising their security. If you notice that your window is hard to open or close, or if you hear a click when turning the handle, it could be an indication that you need to replace the crank mechanism. If you are unable to lock your window, or the multipoint lock is broken it might be worthwhile to consider replacing this component of the hardware too.
A new window crank can easily be replaced with minimal effort, but it's important to make sure you buy the correct size replacement. You can tell if the replacement has the exact same height of step as the original one by measuring the distance from the guide for the crank arm bushing to the notch on the track at the bottom of the frame. Alternately, you can take a measurement of the length of the spindle on your current handle to determine the size you need to get a replacement.
The type of handle on your window will determine the type of crank mechanism required for your casement and window awnings. Espag handles have a mental spindle in the back that is fixed to the frame of the window and drives the mechanism. Cockspur handles have pegs that are fixed in place by three or even four screws that are fitted into the sash and frame.
Once you've identified the right replacement, it's simple to fit. Remove any trim mounting screws from the casement cover, and carefully lift the cover off to reveal the innards of the window operator (Photo 1). Compare the new operating lever with the previous one and take off any rusted trim screw. Attach the new lever to the window frame. Replace any screws that are rusted or bent. Then, put the casement cover on top of the mechanism.
